Start where it matters. The Patriots took Drake Maye to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Landing Legette that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. Reaching for Laube left real value on the table behind him. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 5 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Brian Thomas Jr. in No. 34. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Jordan Morgan went about where he belonged in the 37th overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
Taking Xavier Legette in pick 68 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A clean, defensible pick in the 69th pick with a little surplus value in Kamren Kinchens. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Max Melton at slot 103 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor itch, scratched.
A wild overpay on Dylan Laube in Round 5, Pick 1, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jalyx Hunt in the Round 6 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They robbed the room for Jaheim Bell here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
JD Bertrand in the 231st overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A minor need, but a need all the same.
