Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Dwight McGlothern got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at the Round 6 slot. The bottom line is a respectable B.
The Johnson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 13 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Troy Fautanu slid further than he should have, and Round 2, Pick 2 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. The roster fit checks out.
T'Vondre Sweat in slot 44 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They took Kiran Amegadjie at par in the 68th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid a round early for Trey Benson in pick 79, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Theo Johnson at the Round 4 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Christian Jones at the 137th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Good price on Jaylin Simpson in pick No. 143, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Marist Liufau in the 180th pick. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They paid up for Ryan Flournoy at Round 6, Pick 18 when waiting would have done the job. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Dwight McGlothern in pick No. 197 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
A tidy bit of business in the 231st overall pick, where JD Bertrand graded well above the range. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
