New England Patriots

The Patriots let Stutsman fall and pounced. Final grade: B+.

You could see the war room lean forward. Danny Stutsman at the 144th overall pick is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.

Reaching for Moss left real value on the table behind him. Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but safety.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.7 · Pick 7 · Walter Nolen · DT · rank 11
In the Round 1 slot they get a run-stuffing presence up front at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Josh Simmons · OT · rank 28
A quiet steal in No. 41: Josh Simmons for less than the market said. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R2.11 · Pick 43 · Jalon Walker · LB-EDGE · rank 32
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jalon Walker in slot 43. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.8 · Pick 72 · Colston Loveland · TE · rank 61
Value with a capital V on Colston Loveland in the 72nd overall pick, a genuine coup. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.22 · Pick 86 · Jalen Royals · WR · rank 71
The board had Jalen Royals higher than the 86th pick, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.7 · Pick 108 · Le'Veon Moss · RB · rank 132
Le'Veon Moss at pick 108 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.6 · Pick 144 · Danny Stutsman · LB · rank 91
They robbed the room for Danny Stutsman here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R5.11 · Pick 149 · Drew Allar · QB · rank 107
Drew Allar in Round 5, Pick 11 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.10 · Pick 185 · Ricky White III · WR · rank 171
Ricky White III is a better player than No. 185 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.4 · Pick 218 · Quincy Riley · CB · rank 197
A cornerback of that caliber at pick 218 is the definition of value, full stop. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R7.6 · Pick 220 · Luke Lachey · TE · rank 220
A straight-up fair deal on Luke Lachey at slot 220, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.22 · Pick 236 · Dont'e Thornton Jr. · WR · rank 196
They barely believed it either: Dont'e Thornton Jr. still on the board at pick No. 236. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.42 · Pick 256 · J.C. Davis · OT · rank 233
You do not let an offensive lineman like J.C. Davis reach the 256th pick and blink. They did not. The roster fit checks out.
