The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The cost of the Rosengarten reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
Troy Franklin at the Round 2 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Patrick Paul at pick 68, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Isaac Guerendo in the 104th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A reach for Roger Rosengarten in No. 136; a little patience would have been rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Dwight McGlothern in pick No. 182 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Tanner McLachlan in slot 229 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A need, and now a little less of one.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Trevin Wallace in the 241st pick. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
