The Patriots bet big and early on Kimani Vidal, 73 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
So much rides on Drake Maye that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
Troy Fautanu at pick No. 34 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. The roster fit checks out.
By-the-book stuff, Devontez Walker at slot 68 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Theo Johnson in the 103rd overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
A clean, defensible pick in the 137th pick with a little surplus value in Christian Jones. A need, and now a little less of one.
They talked themselves into Kimani Vidal at Round 6, Pick 5, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They took Justin Rogers at par in the Round 6 slot, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A straight-up fair deal on Trevin Wallace at Round 7, Pick 11, value and slot in agreement. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
