The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
The Vidal pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
That Smith pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
Good price on Brian Thomas Jr. in slot 34, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No drama and no debate, Patrick Paul went about where he belonged in pick No. 68. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They did well to land Brenden Rice in the 103rd overall pick, just ahead of his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Dallin Holker in pick 137 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A need, and now a little less of one.
A safety of that caliber at Round 6, Pick 5 is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A wild overpay on Kimani Vidal in No. 193, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The roster fit checks out.
No edge and no loss on Trevin Wallace in the 231st pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
