New England Patriots

The Patriots won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: A-.

There is reaching, and then there is Devin Leary at the 231st overall pick. The Patriots jumped the board by 76 and dared it to prove them wrong. They executed a plan and it shows in the A-.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Landing Wright that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.

Trust the process, because this time the process plainly worked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.11 · Pick 11 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 9
In pick No. 11 they get a true top target at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · Ja'Tavion Sanders · TE · rank 36
A reasonable price with a little left over, Ja'Tavion Sanders in the Round 2 slot. The roster fit checks out.
R2.11 · Pick 43 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 49
They took Edgerrin Cooper at par in the 43rd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 69
Patrick Paul in the 68th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.23 · Pick 86 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 71
Jaylen Wright at No. 86 is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. It fills a real need, too.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Spencer Rattler · QB · rank 117
They paid a round early for Spencer Rattler in slot 103, more than the board wanted. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Blake Fisher · OT · rank 118
Blake Fisher at the Round 4 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.29 · Pick 129 · Tyler Davis · DT · rank 120
Nice patience on Tyler Davis, who had no business lasting to pick No. 129. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Jarrian Jones · CB · rank 136
No edge and no loss on Jarrian Jones in the 137th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R5.7 · Pick 143 · Jaylin Simpson · CB · rank 137
Fair-plus on Jaylin Simpson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Tip Reiman · TE · rank 182
By-the-book stuff, Tip Reiman at pick 180 squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.13 · Pick 188 · Fabien Lovett · DL · rank 184
Nothing to complain about; Fabien Lovett went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Trevin Wallace · LB · rank 233
They left a pile of value on the table to take Trevin Wallace this early at No. 193. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Devin Leary · QB · rank 307
Value said wait; Devin Leary in the 231st overall pick says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
