The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development.
They banked enough surplus on Fashanu to cover a lot of smaller sins. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. They are betting McLachlan proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd overall pick they get a long-term answer under center. A real need, handled.
Somehow Olumuyiwa Fashanu was still sitting there in the 34th pick, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. It fills a real need, too.
A straight-up fair deal on Ja'Lynn Polk at Round 3, Pick 8, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 103 with a little surplus value in Cam Hart. A minor itch, scratched.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jamari Thrash in the Round 4 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jaylin Simpson at No. 137 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They took Jordan Jefferson at par in slot 180, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A conviction pick on Tanner McLachlan at pick No. 193 that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They read the board right and JD Bertrand was the payoff at pick No. 231. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
