After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
That Simpson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Troy Fautanu at slot 34. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Steal is underselling it; Xavier Legette at the 68th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cade Stover at the Round 4 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A slide stopped in the 137th overall pick, with Isaac Guerendo worth more than the price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
You do not let a cornerback like Jaylin Simpson reach No. 180 and blink. They did not. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Fabien Lovett in pick 193. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Ryan Flournoy at pick No. 231 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
