The real work happened on the phones. The Patriots fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. On value alone, McGlothern makes the weekend a net positive. If Johnson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
The Bobby Okereke deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 6 they get a long-term starter on the line. A clean fit for the roster.
Xavier Legette at No. 34 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No edge and no loss on Ricky Pearsall in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jaylen Wright in slot 68 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Bucky Irving in the 87th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Theo Johnson in pick 103, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
No drama and no debate, Jaylin Simpson went about where he belonged in No. 137. A minor itch, scratched.
Steal is underselling it; Dwight McGlothern at the Round 6 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
They paid sticker price for Trente Jones in Round 6, Pick 18, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They took Trevin Wallace at par in pick 231, which is nothing to complain about. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
