The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Jayden Daniels, and the whole operation now runs on his development.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. If Johnson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Liufau.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Roman Wilson at No. 43, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Kingsley Suamataia in the Round 3 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jaylen Wright at pick No. 74 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They talked themselves into Theo Johnson at slot 103, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jarrian Jones. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They read the board right and Marist Liufau was the payoff at the 180th overall pick. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Fabien Lovett slipping to pick 193 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Trevin Wallace at the 231st pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
