Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Edgerrin Cooper got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at pick No. 68. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. They will need Wiley to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 8 they get a building block for the line. A real need, handled.
Bo Nix at pick 34 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They will replay Kool-Aid McKinstry at pick No. 43 for years; that is how good the value is. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They robbed the room for Edgerrin Cooper here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A minor itch, scratched.
They took Isaac Guerendo at par in No. 110, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A clean, defensible pick in Round 4, Pick 36 with a little surplus value in Ben Sinnott. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jared Wiley at the 182nd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The roster fit checks out.
They paid sticker price for Trevin Wallace in the 229th pick, and that is fine. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
