After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. McLachlan has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd pick they get their quarterback of the future at fair value.
Malachi Corley at No. 34 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kingsley Suamataia in pick No. 68 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jalen McMillan. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Steal is underselling it; Christian Mahogany at slot 137 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A wild overpay on Tanner McLachlan in the Round 6 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The roster fit checks out.
A reach for Kimani Vidal in pick 193; a little patience would have been rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They read the board right and Darius Muasau was the payoff at Round 7, Pick 11. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
