The rest of the league had time to spare on Patrick Payton; the Patriots did not wait, grabbing him 66 spots ahead at No. 191. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C.
They banked enough surplus on Hurst to cover a lot of smaller sins. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
They went 8 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 31 they get a two-high chess piece at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Keyron Crawford at pick 63 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A wide receiver of that caliber at the 95th pick is the definition of value, full stop. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached into another round for Isaiah World, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A need, and now a little less of one.
Ted Hurst in the 131st overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Max Llewellyn. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Marlin Klein at the 171st pick is the proof. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Bryce Boettcher slipping to pick 185 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A real head-scratcher, Patrick Payton in the 191st overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Fair-plus on Cameron Ball, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No edge and no loss on Sawyer Robertson in slot 208; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A big swing on Eric O'Neill at Round 6, Pick 31, well ahead of any board in the building. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Jaydn Ott at par in No. 247, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They talked themselves into Dominic Zvada at pick No. 252, and the board did not agree. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
