After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
The James value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 3 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A real need, handled.
They did well to land Adonai Mitchell in the 34th pick, just ahead of his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No edge and no loss on Patrick Paul in Round 3, Pick 4; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
DJ James at the 103rd overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board had cheaper options than Tyrone Tracy Jr. at pick 137, and it noticed. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Braiden McGregor in the Round 6 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A premium they did not need to pay, Ryan Flournoy a notch or two before his time. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Nice patience on Garret Greenfield, who had no business lasting to slot 231. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
