Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Jared Wilson, the No. 109 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 222nd overall pick.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 10 they get a blindside protector at fair value.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Emeka Egbuka at Round 2, Pick 6 is the proof. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They will replay Tyler Warren at the 39th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Omarr Norman-Lott at pick 77 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They let Denzel Burke come to them and pounced at slot 105. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Cam Skattebo in No. 145 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
Taking Jeffrey Bassa in the 219th pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It adds depth where they could use a little.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Jared Wilson reach the Round 7 slot and blink. They did not. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They robbed the room for Kobe King here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
