Boards are made to be trusted, and the Patriots shredded theirs for Aydan White. He came off 51 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
That Sampson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
For all the activity, safety went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Campbell pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with safety, quarterback and other spots still on the board.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 14 they get a premier pass rusher at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Jalon Walker at the Round 2 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A curious use of Round 2, Pick 20. Safety, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Jihaad Campbell did not.
Taking Dylan Sampson in pick 77 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick No. 120 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They liked DeMonte Capehart enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 143. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jalen Travis at pick 217 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Aydan White in Round 7, Pick 4 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Garrett Dellinger at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
