Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Barrett Carter, the No. 83 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 145th overall pick. The bottom line is a respectable B.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They left with safety solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 14 they get a ballhawk on the outside. Need was not the driver here.
Nice patience on Malaki Starks, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board had Harold Fannin Jr. higher than the 69th overall pick, and the tight end fell to them anyway. It fills a real need, too.
Barrett Carter at the 145th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Good price on Tyler Cooper in pick 185, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Circle this one: Bhayshul Tuten at pick No. 219 is a fall that decides a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
