There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Patriots started one anyway for Chad Lindberg, 33 picks ahead of schedule. Very little went wrong, and the A- is earned.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Rice at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. The veteran additions, Tyjae Spears chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 7 they get a building block for the line. A real need, handled.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Amarius Mims at No. 34 is the proof. The roster fit checks out.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Xavier Legette. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They will replay Brenden Rice at the 101st overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Donovan Edwards at Round 4, Pick 5 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jordan Travis in the Round 5 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Value with a capital V on Chau Smith-Wade in pick 180, a genuine coup. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A clean, defensible pick in Round 6, Pick 7 with a little surplus value in Josh Proctor. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Austin Stogner at the 184th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Chad Lindberg at slot 224 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
