Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Josaiah Stewart, the No. 53 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick 238. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a problem off the edge. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Jahdae Barron in No. 38, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They will replay Malaki Starks at the 69th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
You do not let a running back like Ashton Jeanty reach pick 77 and blink. They did not. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Taking Colston Loveland in the 113th pick is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jalon Walker in slot 143 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Somehow Wyatt Milum was still sitting there in Round 5, Pick 14, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at pick No. 217 is the definition of value, full stop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They robbed the room for Tre Harris here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Josaiah Stewart at the 238th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
