The real work happened on the phones. The Patriots fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A- to show for it.
For all the activity, safety went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Matthew Stafford deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
Bottom line, with Taliese Fuaga leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 19th overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
They paid sticker price for Xavier Legette in pick 34, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Xavier Worthy in pick No. 62 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A clean, defensible pick in the 68th pick with a little surplus value in Kingsley Suamataia. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Khyree Jackson at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
By-the-book stuff, Mekhi Wingo at slot 103 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Theo Johnson slipping to No. 130 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jalyx Hunt a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
