The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The cost of the Jones reach is exactly the players who went right after him. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through safety.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 24 they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
Amarius Mims slid further than he should have, and Round 2, Pick 2 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Kingsley Suamataia at the Round 2 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A reach on Jermaine Burton in No. 68; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They liked Mekhi Wingo enough to skip the value, taking him in the 87th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jarrian Jones at slot 103 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Jalyx Hunt in the 128th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They took Elijah Jones at par in pick No. 137, which is nothing to complain about. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Christian Jones at pick 144 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cornelius Johnson. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
