The Patriots did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Jeffrey Bassa fell into the 220th overall pick. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
Morris has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Abdul Carter at the 6th pick squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Tyler Warren in pick 37 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The roster fit checks out.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Walter Nolen in Round 2, Pick 6. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Donovan Jackson in the Round 3 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They will replay Jihaad Campbell at the 77th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A tidy little value on Azareye'h Thomas in No. 104, a step better than break-even. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They robbed the room for Devin Neal here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It fills a real need, too.
Cam Skattebo at pick No. 178 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jared Wilson in slot 216 is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Micah Morris. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jeffrey Bassa at pick No. 220 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
They reached into another round for Thor Griffith, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
