The Patriots put a flag in the ground for Drew Kendall, 102 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Gordon II. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 1 they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Emeka Egbuka at No. 36 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Dylan Fairchild at pick No. 67 is the proof. A need, and now a little less of one.
A running back of that caliber at slot 79 is the definition of value, full stop. The roster fit checks out.
Jake Majors is a better player than the 103rd overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Deontae Lawson in the 138th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A wild overpay on Trey Wedig in slot 219, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Drew Kendall at the 220th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Ollie Gordon II in Round 7, Pick 24, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
