Somebody in slot 81 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Tyler Warren, the No. 44 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 8th overall pick they get a double-digit-sack hope. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line at fair value. A real need, handled.
They let Kenneth Grant come to them and pounced at pick No. 40. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jihaad Campbell in pick 67, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Taking Tyler Warren in Round 3, Pick 17 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
