You can hear the double-takes from here. The Patriots took Emery Jones Jr. at No. 81, roughly 96 spots before his name belonged.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Carter. That safety hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 4 they get a double-digit-sack hope. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A wide receiver of that caliber at the 38th pick is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Alfred Collins at the 69th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A big swing on Emery Jones Jr. at Round 3, Pick 17, well ahead of any board in the building. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Nothing to complain about; Azareye'h Thomas went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Quinshon Judkins at the Round 4 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Steal is underselling it; Barrett Carter at the 143rd pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
