The Patriots did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Cam Skattebo fell into the Round 7 slot. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
The cost of the Slackman reach is exactly the players who went right after him. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 4 they get juice off the edge. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A tidy little value on Harold Fannin Jr. in No. 38, a step better than break-even. The roster fit checks out.
Andrew Mukuba in the 69th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Fair-plus on Quinshon Judkins, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They robbed the room for Deontae Lawson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They paid sticker price for Patrick Bryant in the Round 5 slot, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Cam Skattebo at pick 217 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They reached a country mile for Joey Slackman at pick No. 220, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A straight-up fair deal on Shilo Sanders at the 241st pick, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
