The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched Keon Coleman slide 32 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Spending an early pick on OLB-EDGE with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
The Edwards reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 6 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A real need, handled.
J.J. McCarthy at Round 2, Pick 2 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The roster fit checks out.
They will replay Keon Coleman at No. 68 for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid up for Cade Stover at pick 70 when waiting would have done the job. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots to take Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE that was not the priority.
Johnny Wilson slid further than he should have, and slot 136 is lovely value for the wide receiver. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Daijun Edwards at the 182nd overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Andrew Raym at the Round 7 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
