The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
Every board in the league had Means lower, and that gap is the story. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
Xavier Legette at pick No. 34 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid sticker price for Kiran Amegadjie in the 68th pick, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
They went early on Blake Fisher in pick 103, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They took Jarrian Jones at par in No. 137, which is nothing to complain about. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Tanner McLachlan in slot 180 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They talked themselves into Bub Means at the 193rd overall pick, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
