The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched Cody Simon slide 93 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get a premier pass rusher. The biggest hole, addressed.
In slot 24 they get a disruptive interior force at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They will replay Tyler Warren at pick No. 43 for years; that is how good the value is. The roster fit checks out.
Xavier Watts at Round 3, Pick 12 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They barely believed it either: Dylan Sampson still on the board at No. 100. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Circle this one: Danny Stutsman at the Round 4 slot is a fall that decides a draft. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Ryan Fitzgerald at the 148th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Cody Simon in pick 217 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
They robbed the room for Seth McLaughlin here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
