New England Patriots

A costly weekend of dealing drags the Patriots to a C-.

Nobody had Collin Oliver this high, and it is not close. The Patriots reached 77 spots to get him at pick No. 220.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Emmanwori at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.4 · Pick 4 · Tetairoa McMillan · WR · rank 8
No edge and no loss on Tetairoa McMillan in the 4th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Nick Emmanwori · S · rank 19
Steal is underselling it; Nick Emmanwori at the Round 2 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R2.18 · Pick 50 · Carson Schwesinger · LB · rank 71
Carson Schwesinger in slot 50 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Ozzy Trapilo · OT · rank 82
A premium they did not need to pay, Ozzy Trapilo a notch or two before his time. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.33 · Pick 97 · Oluwafemi Oladejo · LB-EDGE · rank 144
Value said wait; Oluwafemi Oladejo in pick 97 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.19 · Pick 121 · Terrance Ferguson · TE · rank 115
A clean, defensible pick in the 121st overall pick with a little surplus value in Terrance Ferguson. It fills a real need, too.
R5.1 · Pick 139 · Mello Dotson · CB · rank 139
Mello Dotson in pick No. 139 is fair value, right on his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R5.11 · Pick 149 · Antwaun Powell-Ryland · DL-EDGE · rank 163
They paid up for Antwaun Powell-Ryland at Round 5, Pick 11 when waiting would have done the job. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.33 · Pick 171 · Caleb Ransaw · S · rank 211
A real head-scratcher, Caleb Ransaw in slot 171 is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.36 · Pick 174 · Isaac TeSlaa · WR · rank 241
A big swing on Isaac TeSlaa at the 174th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.28 · Pick 204 · Tyler Batty · DE-EDGE · rank 250
Tyler Batty at the Round 6 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Collin Oliver · LB-EDGE · rank 297
A wild overpay on Collin Oliver in No. 220, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R7.19 · Pick 235 · Desmond Watson · DT · rank 237
They paid sticker price for Desmond Watson in pick 235, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Zeek Biggers · DT · rank 258
They talked themselves into Zeek Biggers at the 238th pick, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.23 · Pick 239 · Jermari Harris · CB · rank 238
No drama and no debate, Jermari Harris went about where he belonged in the Round 7 slot. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
