The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Nicholas Singleton, the No. 99 name on the board, in the 216th overall pick. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.
Every board in the league had Caldwell lower, and that gap is the story. The phones were where this weekend was really won. For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The Patriots clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 21 they get a disruptor off the edge at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Tate Ratledge at Round 2, Pick 5 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Tyler Warren in pick 63, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Circle this one: TreVeyon Henderson at slot 105 is a fall that decides a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A big swing on Earnest Greene III at No. 122, well ahead of any board in the building. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They will replay Barrett Carter at the 143rd pick for years; that is how good the value is. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They robbed the room for Barrett Carter here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
You do not let a running back like Nicholas Singleton reach the Round 6 slot and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They liked Quincy Riley enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 217. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A real head-scratcher, Oscar Delp in Round 7, Pick 4 is miles ahead of his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
