After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
The cost of the Paul reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The McCormick steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The dealing tilted against them, just enough to notice.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 27 they get their quarterback of the future at fair value.
Brian Thomas Jr. at pick 34 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Adonai Mitchell in pick No. 35. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached into another round for Patrick Paul, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Xavier Worthy at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They talked themselves into Theo Johnson at Round 4, Pick 3, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Jaylin Simpson at slot 137 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They let Mason McCormick come to them and pounced at the 162nd overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
By-the-book stuff, AJ Barner at No. 168 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Good price on Marist Liufau in pick No. 170, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
