The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched Johnny Dixon slide 66 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.
The Gore Jr. pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd pick they get a No. 1 receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
A tidy little value on J.J. McCarthy in No. 34, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No edge and no loss on Patrick Paul in the 68th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A slide stopped in Round 4, Pick 3, with Khyree Jackson worth more than the price. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They let Theo Johnson come to them and pounced at pick No. 137. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A quiet steal in pick 180: Jaheim Bell for less than the market said. The roster fit checks out.
Frank Gore Jr. in the Round 6 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They robbed the room for Johnny Dixon here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Sam Hartman in the 257th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
