The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
The Puni pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The dealing tilted against them, just enough to notice. On the needs board they went 3 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd overall pick they get the face of the franchise at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Brian Thomas Jr. in pick 34 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jermaine Burton at slot 68 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They read the board right and Dominick Puni was the payoff at the Round 4 slot. It fills a real need, too.
A straight-up fair deal on Javon Foster at the 119th pick, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jaylin Simpson in pick No. 140 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
