They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. J.J. McCarthy is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop.
The Franklin pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They are betting McCarthy proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 9 they get a long-term answer under center, though the board says they badly overpaid.
Taking JC Latham in the 34th overall pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
They barely believed it either: Brian Thomas Jr. still on the board at No. 43. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Troy Franklin in the 68th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Somehow Renardo Green was still sitting there in the Round 4 slot, and they pounced on premier safety value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jarrian Jones in slot 122 is fair value, right on his grade. A minor itch, scratched.
Javon Foster at pick No. 137 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
