When a board-topper like Hollin Pierce slides to No. 145, you do not overthink it, and the Patriots did not. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
The Broughton pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered. The skill positions did well by the weekend.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Armand Membou is a better player than Round 2, Pick 6 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They took Tate Ratledge at par in No. 69, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Cam Skattebo at pick 90 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Smael Mondon Jr. at pick No. 100 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Vernon Broughton well ahead of where he belonged. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They will replay Hollin Pierce at the 145th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
