New England Patriots

A passer of the future in McCarthy, and a C, for the Patriots.

Start where it matters. The Patriots took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Flournoy. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

If J.J. McCarthy and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.11 · Pick 11 · Brock Bowers · TE · rank 6
In pick No. 11 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end. A clean fit for the roster.
R1.23 · Pick 23 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 29
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. A real need, handled.
R1.27 · Pick 27 · Terrion Arnold · CB · rank 18
Terrion Arnold at No. 27 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R1.28 · Pick 28 · Graham Barton · OT · rank 25
In the 28th overall pick they get a blindside protector at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Ladd McConkey · WR · rank 34
No edge and no loss on Ladd McConkey in slot 34; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.8 · Pick 72 · Blake Corum · RB · rank 84
Blake Corum in the 72nd pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 96
A clean, defensible pick in pick 103 with a little surplus value in Brenden Rice. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 126
Johnny Wilson at the Round 5 slot is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Malik Mustapha · S · rank 170
They let Malik Mustapha come to them and pounced at the Round 6 slot. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.6 · Pick 226 · Ryan Flournoy · WR · rank 202
Ryan Flournoy at pick 226 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Jordan Magee · LB · rank 222
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jordan Magee in the 231st overall pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R7.39 · Pick 257 · LaDarius Henderson · OT · rank 252
A reasonable price with a little left over, LaDarius Henderson in pick No. 257. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
