When a board-topper like Jordan Travis slides to pick 182, you do not overthink it, and the Patriots did not. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd pick they get a cornerstone up front. A real need, handled.
No edge and no loss on Ja'Tavion Sanders in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Xavier Legette at slot 68 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They did well to land Malik Washington in Round 4, Pick 4, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid sticker price for Christian Jones in pick 136, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Somehow Jordan Travis was still sitting there in No. 182, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Good price on Frank Gore Jr. in the 229th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
