The Patriots bet big and early on Barryn Sorrell, 92 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. No fireworks, but a solid B.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 8 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A clean fit for the roster.
They did well to land Omarion Hampton in Round 2, Pick 6, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Donovan Jackson in the 57th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Mason Taylor in slot 69 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They reached into another round for Quincy Riley, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cam Jackson. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Barryn Sorrell in the 222nd overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Kyren Lacy at pick 240 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
