The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Every board in the league had Corum lower, and that gap is the story.
Landing Puni that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 15 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
In No. 17 they get their quarterback of the future, even if it was a touch early. A real need, handled.
In the 27th overall pick they get a problem off the edge, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Ladd McConkey at pick No. 34, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Ja'Tavion Sanders at Round 2, Pick 3 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Blake Corum in the Round 3 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Dominick Puni slid further than he should have, and the 103rd pick is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
