The Patriots did not so much draft Drew Kendall as overpay for him, 66 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. On value alone, Williams makes the weekend a net positive.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Abdul Carter in pick 4; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They went early on Aireontae Ersery in the 38th pick, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
A conviction pick on Mason Taylor at pick No. 69 that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
By-the-book stuff, Ozzy Trapilo at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They read the board right and Savion Williams was the payoff at slot 106. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Smael Mondon Jr. slid further than he should have, and the 119th overall pick is lovely value for the linebacker. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Brashard Smith at the 144th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A quiet steal in Round 7, Pick 1: Caleb Ransaw for less than the market said. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They reached a country mile for Drew Kendall at pick No. 220, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Cody Lindenberg at pick 238 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
