There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Patriots started one anyway for Drew Kendall, 48 picks ahead of schedule.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Brooks. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A clean fit for the roster.
Tyler Booker at the 38th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
No edge and no loss on Jayden Higgins in slot 69; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Omarr Norman-Lott at pick No. 77 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No drama and no debate, Smael Mondon Jr. went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Trevor Etienne in the 144th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Steal is underselling it; Tahj Brooks at pick 217 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for CJ Dippre. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Drew Kendall at pick No. 238 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
