The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched Jaydon Blue slide 44 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. The bottom line is a respectable B.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.
The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
Tyler Warren at Round 1, Pick 30 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
By-the-book stuff, Tyler Booker at the 38th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
They took Aireontae Ersery at par in No. 44, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jayden Higgins in pick No. 69 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board had Cameron Williams higher than pick 77, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A need, and now a little less of one.
Circle this one: Barrett Carter at the Round 4 slot is a fall that decides a draft. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A tidy little value on Jake Majors in slot 132, a step better than break-even. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Nice patience on Brashard Smith, who had no business lasting to the 144th pick. The roster fit checks out.
A straight-up fair deal on Jack Kiser at the 177th pick, value and slot in agreement. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Caleb Ransaw. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Jaydon Blue in No. 217, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
You do not let a safety like Jaylen Reed reach slot 220 and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Chimere Dike in pick 238 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid sticker price for Cody Lindenberg in Round 7, Pick 40, and that is fine. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
