The war room fell hard for Dominic Lovett, and it showed at Round 7, Pick 5: 111 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Campbell falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 2nd overall pick they get a potential shutdown corner. Need was not the driver here.
Omarion Hampton in Round 2, Pick 6 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nick Emmanwori at No. 39 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Malaki Starks in the Round 2 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Tyler Warren at pick No. 69 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A need, and now a little less of one.
Somehow Jihaad Campbell was still sitting there in pick 83, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jake Majors at Round 4, Pick 4 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It fills a real need, too.
Luke Kandra in No. 140 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Dominic Lovett at the 219th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jasheen Davis at pick No. 222 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Micah Morris in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
