Somebody in slot 145 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Cam Skattebo, the No. 105 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. They will need Jackson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Interior defensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 4 they get a run-stuffing presence up front at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Somehow Tyler Warren was still sitting there in the 38th overall pick, and they pounced on premier tight end value. It fills a real need, too.
They went early on Donovan Jackson in the Round 3 slot, and the value did not follow. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Tate Ratledge in the 78th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A need, and now a little less of one.
Taking Andrew Mukuba in Round 4, Pick 4 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They barely believed it either: Cam Skattebo still on the board at pick No. 145. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board had Cody Simon higher than No. 153, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. It adds depth where they could use a little.
