The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development.
If Suamataia pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Smith.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 3 they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kingsley Suamataia. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Patrick Paul in slot 68 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A real head-scratcher, Johnny Wilson in the Round 4 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Dylan Laube in the 137th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Taking Tykee Smith in Round 6, Pick 5 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A reach on Ryan Flournoy in the 193rd overall pick; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid sticker price for Tylan Grable in pick No. 231, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
