The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Michael Penix Jr., and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They will answer for taking cornerback early while edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots went begging.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
No edge and no loss on Adonai Mitchell in pick 34; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A straight-up fair deal on Patrick Paul at pick No. 42, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
Johnny Wilson at No. 68 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Khyree Jackson in the Round 4 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A minor itch, scratched.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cam Hart adds a cornerback and leaves edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots untouched.
