Start where it matters. The Patriots took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up.
They are betting Hunt proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
Trust the process, because this time the process plainly worked.
Pick-by-Pick
J.J. McCarthy in the 18th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Legette at slot 34, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on T'Vondre Sweat. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No edge and no loss on Kingsley Suamataia in pick No. 60; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They took Patrick Paul at par in pick 68, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Elijah Jones in Round 4, Pick 3 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It adds depth where they could use a little.
The board had cheaper options than Jalyx Hunt at No. 137, and it noticed. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
