The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. The final tally is a middling C-.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
If Guerendo pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Getting McKinstry where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
So much rides on J.J. McCarthy that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 11 they get a true top target. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Kool-Aid McKinstry slid further than he should have, and No. 34 is lovely value for the cornerback. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Kingsley Suamataia at Round 3, Pick 4 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Isaac Guerendo well ahead of where he belonged. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board had cheaper options than Luke McCaffrey at slot 137, and it noticed. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
